Radio 1 listeners stunned to find out their microwave is killing their wifi connection

Are you joining the rest of the nation tearing your hair out because the twentieth episode of the series you’re streaming keeps buffering or you can’t access your emails while working-from-home?

Fear not! There may be a very simple solution to your isolation woes.

Radio 1 listeners were stunned to find out a common household item may be significantly interfering with their ability to watch every movie on Disney+.

Roisin Hastie presented Newsbeat on BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show with Greg James on Wednesday morning, and brought some surprising news at the end of her broadcast.

She told the nation: “If you’ve been having any problems streaming movies or TV shows now you're spending more time at home, it could be down to your microwave.

“The official advice says its best to keep it off because waves from your microwave can interfere with your wifi signal.”

Radio 1 listeners were stunned to hear the advice, flocking to social media to share their surprise.

One wrote: “I literally ran to turn my microwave off after hearing it’s messing with my wifi,” while another said “There’s now a note on mine saying ‘DO NOT USE’ lol.”

A third said: “Omg I can’t believe how much better my wifi’s just got turning off my microwave, I’m shook.”

According to UK media watchdog Ofcom, you should keep your router as far away as possible from other devices, and those which operate wirelessly.

“Cordless phones, baby monitors, halogen lamps, dimmer switches, stereos and computer speakers, TVs and monitors can all affect your wifi if they’re too close to your router,” their latest advice states.

“Did you know that microwave ovens can also reduce wifi signals? So don’t use the microwave when you’re making video calls, watching HD videos or doing something important online.

“Also, place your router on a table or shelf rather than on the floor, and keep it switched on,” the watchdog’s advice continued.
