Radford shop manager fights back as raider walks in with a kitchen knife

A shop manager bravely fought back when a knife-wielding would-be robber turned up.

The man was faced with drug addict Grant Hakim in O.K Food Store, Radford Road, Radford, at about 5.30pm on August 1.

He initially thought a hooded and masked Hakim was joking, Nottingham Crown Court heard on Friday, December 3.

But then he realised it was not a joke and described being "in fear of his knife".

The man picked up a screwdriver or chisel near to the till in case he needed to defend himself.

Hakim jabbed the kitchen knife towards the victim's chest.

But he courageously grabbed the defendant and there was a tussle, where the shop manager was stabbed in the hand, leaving him injured to the back of his hand and between fingers and a thumb.

He disarmed Hakim by banging his hand against something and grabbed the knife and snapped the blade from the handle.

But, despite this, Hakim grabbed bottles of booze and hit him over the head, breaking the bottles with the force used.

Hakim, who had been a customer in the shop previously and had never been a problem and helped local residents, said: "Boss man. Look, it's me. Let me go."

Another customer jumped on the defendant and held him until police arrived.

Hakim swore and said: "I didn't mean to do that. I'm just trying to rob the shop. That's all I am trying to do."

Afterwards, as Hakim was taken away by police, the victim, who had blood running down his head where he had cuts, needed stitches to his hand and head. He had a scratch on the top of his thigh where he believes he was jabbed with the knife.

He said in a statement he had since installed a panic alarm and now closes the shop earlier.

"I don't feel safe in my shop when strangers come in," he said, "I have been in my shop for 11 years in the UK and this is the first time I have felt uncomfortable and afraid while on my own in my shop".

After Hakim was arrested and interviewed, he said: "I was an idiot, and bang to rights."

He was addicted to drugs at the time. He told police he was "'really ashamed and he did not intend to hurt anyone and he was just trying to scare in order to get some money'," explained Katrina Wilson, prosecuting.

Aged 31, Hakim, of no fixed address, has 41 convictions for 89 offences on his record. He has ongoing mental health issues.

Judge Stephen Coupland, who considered him dangerous, said the victim of this incident was left dizzy and bleeding and required stitches to his hand and head.

All the charges Hakim was sentenced for were admitted by him. For attempted robbery, his sentence was five years and four months in custody, with an extended licence on release of four years. He received 18 months concurrently for wounding and eight months concurrently for having a bladed article.
