Racist thug spat at cops and shouted about coronavirus during takeaway tirade

A teenager who spat at police while shouting about coronavirus then racially abused a cop has been jailed.

Samir Fouad, 18, lashed out at police when officers were trying to help him after he appeared to have been attacked outside a takeaway.

Police were called to a fast food restaurant in High Street, Harlesden, north west London, to claims criminal damage was being carried out.

But when police arrived at the scene last July 3 evening, the restaurant was closed and there was no sign of any damage having taken place.

The door to an upstairs flat was open and a man told officers there had been a fight and led them to a room where Fouad was on a bed screaming in pain.

He did not speak English and appeared to be pointing to his shoulder, police said.

An ambulance was called and officers tried to explain they were getting him help, but Fouad began behaving very erratically.

He got up and walked from the room and then tried to jump from a window, before being pulled away and restrained by officers on the bed, Scotland Yard said.

Fouad then kicked out and shouted 'corona' before spitting at two of the cops, who then arrested him and put handcuffs on the suspect.

As he was being put in the police van, Fouad racially abused one of the officers.

On Wednesday he pleaded guilty in court to two charges of assaulting an emergency worker and one charge of racially abusing a police officer.

A judge at Croydon Crown Court sentenced Fouad to 20 weeks in prison.

Inspector Sammi Elfituri of the Met Police, based in Brent, north west London, said officers were trying to help the defendant when he attacked them.

He said: "The officers called to the scene were simply trying to help Fouad after they found him injured.

"To be spat at and racially abused is completely unacceptable and it is right that he has received a custodial sentence.

"Spitting is despicable at any time, but it is even more reprehensible in the middle of a pandemic when officers, like the public, are working so hard to stop the spread of coronavirus."
