Racist Snapchat post showing black woman in toilet alleged to be posted by Dublin student

A woman who's alleged to be a student in a Dublin college has been caught up in controversy after a selfie was posted on Snapchat with a racist caption aimed at a black woman.

A number of complaints have been made to TU (formerly DIT) after the pic was posted showing the woman in a bathroom with a caption that read "yup the monkey".

TU confirmed they're looking into the post after it was brought to their attention by a number of people.

The photo was not taken at a college event and it's not believed the woman is a member of their student union.

A follow-up post alleged to be from the same woman apologised to "everyone who was hurt" by the caption.

It said: "I wish I could take it back. I would never say something like that.

"I was drinking and ended up saying something so horrible.

"I also want to apologise to all my black friends who had to see that.

"Words can't describe how sorry I am I hope people can find it in their hearts to forgive this terrible mistake."

Support is now being offered to anyone who found the image upsetting while people are being asked not to share the image as it shows the face of the victim.

In a statement to Dublin Live TU said: "Racism and intolerance are completely counter to the values of this University, our students and our staff.

"We find the image posted on social media to be abhorrent, and we would ask that it should not be re-posted by anyone.

"While we would take any instance of racism very seriously, we cannot comment on internal disciplinary matters.

"Our Counselling and Pastoral Care services are available to any student who has been affected by this."
