Racist messages in Manchester city centre are being replaced with pictures of cats

Somebody has been placing cat stickers over racist messages in Manchester city centre.

The cat sticker was spotted on a lamp post on Nicholas Street, close to Manchester Art Gallery, earlier this week.

It features a photograph of a cat and reads: "There was some racist rubbish here but I covered it up with this picture of a cat."

The sticker is thought to have been placed over a fake Extinction Rebellion poster.

Mocked up posters with the environmental activists group's logo of an hourglass have been placed in cities across the UK.

The fake posters have extremist messages on them about race and immigration.

Extinction Rebellion, who blocked Deansgate in the city centre in August last summer, said the fake posters do not endorse the group's views and are urging their members to take them down.

A tweet from the Brighton Extinction Rebellion group said: "Calling all rebels to remove any posters that have racist/white supremacy slogans with the XR logo.

"They have been put up around Brighton and Hove but are not endorsed by Extinction Rebellion in any way, our movement is based on loe and inclusion. The messages do not adhere to our principles."
