Racist fans to be banned from football with change to order regime

The Government is changing the football banning order regime to cover online racism, Boris Johnson told MPs at Prime Minister’s Questions.

The move comes after England players were abused following the team's defeat in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday.

Speaking in the House of Commons Mr Johnson said: "I utterly condemn and abhor the racist outpourings that we saw on Sunday night, and so what we’re doing is today is taking practical steps to ensure that the football banning order regime is changed, so that if you are guilty of racist abuse online of footballers, then you will not be going to the match, no ifs, no buts, no exemptions and no excuses."

The move means that people found guilty of football related racial abuse online could find themselves banned from attending live football matches.

Mr Johnson said he has also met with the leaders of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Snapchat to make it clear to them that they will be required to stop and remove racial abuse - or face huge fines.
