Racist battered girlfriend on the day she left hospital

A racist battered his girlfriend on the day she was discharged from hospital.

Alan Reid bought vodka and orange juice with the woman despite her having suffered an overdose.

Later that night the 50-year-old dragged the woman by her hair after she tried to leave and was seen kicking her.

A concerned neighbour helped the woman, who the ECHO has chosen not to name, and took her to his flat, but dad-of-three Reid then hurled vile racist abuse and waved a knife through his letterbox.

Nardeen Nemat, prosecuting at Liverpool Crown Court, said on the day the woman was released from hospital, on June 13 this year, she met Reid who walked her back to his flat.

Ms Nemat said the woman "describes herself as being an alcoholic and was trying to pace her alcohol intake" but on the way back Reid and the woman stopped to buy alcohol.

She continued said: "Her recollection of events was not the clearest but she describes how during the night the defendant became abusive towards her saying she was his and no one else's."

The woman went to leave but Reid followed and pushed her to the floor and attacked her.

Ms Nemat said the woman described being in "a lot of pain" and "thinks she may have blacked out" and at one point saw Reid with a smashed glass.

Reid pulled the woman's hair and kicked her several times to her ribs.

A resident in a neighbouring flat, Mr Fashola, "opened his front door and heard shouting and screaming" from the hallway at around 2am on June 14.

He saw Reid dragging the woman by her hair in the hallway and kicking her.

Mr Fashola intervened, breaking them up, and when he asked what had happened Reid replied "f*** off you n*****".

The woman went into Mr Fashola's flat but Reid began shouting "n*****" and banging on the door with so much force the wall shook, eventually creating a hole in the wall.

Ms Nemat said the woman went back to Reid's flat as she feared for Mr Fashola and his girlfriend, who was also present.

But Reid continued to shout at the neighbours and said: "Give me a fag now, I'm going to stab you, I will f***ing kill you, I don't like black people, you're a n*****".

He even waved a knife through the neighbour's letter box as he threatened to injure him.

Ms Nemat explained at around 4.15am Mr Fashola's mum, Mrs Bourke, arrived and as she walked towards her son's flat Reid brandished a broken beer glass and hurled racist insults while threatening to stab her.

Reid hit the woman with a body part causing "bruising and swelling".

The court heard Reid's now ex suffered bruising, sore ribs, swelling and an injury to her right cheek.

In an interview Reid denied the racist abuse and "said he supported Black Lives Matter".

In a statement the woman said: "Alan said he would look out for me but he did the opposite of that."

She said she had suffered domestic abuse before and said "everyone I meet is abusing me rather than loving me like a partner should".

Mr Fashola said he is now living in his mum's home after the incident because it "became clear where I lived wasn't safe".

He said: "I never thought I would be subject to such racism and hate."

Reid has 61 previous convictions for 130 offences including; common assault in 2001, assaulting a constable in 2002, affray in 2005, battery in 2006, assault causing actual bodily harm in 2007, possession of an offensive weapon in 2009 and possession of a bladed article in 2010.

He was last in court on January 4 this year for possession of a knife for which he received six months in custody.

Cheryl Mottram, defending, said he is "genuinely remorseful" and was "quite disgusted with himself" for the racist abuse he hurled.

She said Reid found the relationship "emotionally draining" and "everything did come to a head on this evening, probably because of the amount of alcohol that had been consumed".

Ms Mottram said: "He is now determined this will be his last visit to these courtrooms."

She added since being in custody he has enrolled on a Maths and English course and hopes to gain a qualification in building work.

Ms Mottram said: "Whilst alcohol was a problem on this occasion it isn't something he struggles with generally."

Reid, of Winmarleigh Street, Warrington, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm, assault by beating, racially aggravated fear or provocation of violence and racially aggravated assault.

Judge Anil Murray, sentencing, said: “This was a shocking incident. You acted in a violent, racist, frightening and unrestrained way.”

Reid was jailed for two years and three months.

An indefinite restraining order banning him from contacting or approaching any of his victims was also imposed.
