'Racing' motorcyclist killed after being flung from bike, falling 10m

The crash happened at the Burnley Tunnel exit ramp on Bolte Bridge.

A motorcycle rider has killed in a high-speed crash after being thrown from his bike and falling 10 metres over the railing of a Melbourne freeway exit ramp, police have said.

Witnesses told police two bikes were racing along the Bolte Bridge when one lost control on a bend for the exit ramp to the Burnley Tunnel.

The rider crashed into the side barrier and was thrown off his bike, Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor from Victoria Police said.

"He's gone straight into the railing, and once he's hit the railing he's gone over the edge, hit the ground below — about 10 metres below — and unfortunately he hasn't survived," he said.

The 32-year-old man from Highett died at the scene.

"The second motorcyclist … has kept going, hasn't stopped, hasn't done the right thing and we need to know who that person is so that we can bring that person before the courts," Detective Inspector McGregor said.

He said when some motorcyclists and car drivers see a wide open freeway they treat it as a "race track".

"There's nothing safe about doing these speeds along these roads," he said.

"The message is clear — if you want to race, go on to a race track. If you want to survive stick to the speed limit."
