Rachel Sermanni: Tied to the Moon review – richer with swagger

Rocky and brooding ... Rachel Sermanni.
Rocky and brooding ... Rachel Sermanni.

Rachel Sermanni, at the age of just 23, is quietly proving herself to be one of Britain’s most promising folk artists. Tied to the Moon is a captivating follow-up to her 2012 debut, Under Mountains, offering a richer, darker take on the soft folk of that record. With its driving electric guitars and dreamy chorus, the album opener, Run, showcases Sermanni’s stunning voice and newfound swagger. Her lyrics shine through the slower songs – “How am I? I can’t complain, I just don’t like the neighbours,” she sings on Old Ladies Lament, a delicate, intriguing ditty – but she’s at her best on the rockier, brooding tracks such as I’ve Got a Girl and the Cat Power-esque Tractor.
