Rachel Riley in furious Twitter row with miners over 'tasteless' choice of Jewish song

A furious row has erupted between the Durham Miners' Association and TV presenter Rachel Riley.

Rachel, 33, outspoken about anti-Semitism within the Labour party, slammed a brass band for playing the traditional Jewish song Hava Negila at the Durham Miners' Gala.

The Countdown star, who has Jewish heritage, tweeted that it was "as tasteful as showing Black Panther at a Klan rally." But the Miners' association hit back telling Rachel that her tweet was "damaging" and had hurt people.

"Your damaging comments regarding one of our community brass bands have caused great hurt to good people," they told her in a reply on Twitter .

"Hava Negila has been played at the Durham Gala by many bands over many years. We invite you to Durham to meet and learn from the men, women and children who play in brass bands, celebrating their own culture alongside music from around the world.

"Your invitation's in the post."

Others disagreed with the mum-to-be's tweet with one adding: "This is heartbreaking - as the proud son of a Durham Miner - I'm now a racist anti-Semite?

"One of the most ill-considered tweets I've seen in a long time. And I've seen a lot. This should really be deleted immediately."

Another added: "I'm speechless at how completely offensive it is to equate Durham Gala to the KKK."

But the TV star said she had received support for her views on the row.

"Good Labour people coming forward to condemn their party’s AS problem and actually offer action (not just the empty words of others to cover themselves) following sunlight shed by #Panorama."

It added: "Labour staff tell Corbyn: sort antisemitism crisis - or quit."

Currently on holiday in Spain, and posting of the new joys of 'pregnant married life' with Strictly star husband Pasha Kovalev, she also posted what she described as evidence to support her views.

But Labour supporters put forward Jeremy Corbyn's stringent denials of the claims. One showed his pledge to Labour Party members: "I re-state unequivocally that my party and I stand in solidarity with Jewish communities against the worrying rise of anti-semitism."
