Angela Rayner’s lawyers say they did not give tax advice on buying her seaside flat in Hove - and claim they have been made “scapegoats” in the scandal.
Conveyancing firm Verrico & Associates has insisted it did nothing wrong when handling the purchase of the deputy prime minister’s £800,00 property in May.
Ms Rayner said she had not attempted to dodge taxes when failing to pay the required £40,000 in stamp duty on the second home, but that she had made a “mistake” based on incorrect legal advice.
Sources close to her say she was given legal advice from a conveyancer and two experts in trust law that all suggested the amount of stamp duty she paid on the property was correct - but none has been named.
Verrico & Associates managing director, Joanna Verrico, told The Telegraph: “We did not and never have given tax or trust advice.” She added: “We probably are being made scapegoats for all this, and I have got the arrows stuck in my back to show it.”
It comes amid an ongoing investigation by Sir Keir Starmer’s independent standards adviser into whether Ms Rayner broke ministerial code.

Jo Cox Foundation says no form of 'abuse' is acceptable after Rayner's flat is vandalised

A spokesman for the charity said: “We are concerned by the reports of graffiti outside the apartment building where Angela Rayner owns a property.
“Any form of abuse and intimidation towards politicians, including vandalism at MPs’s homes, is never acceptable in our democracy.”

“A bit like the allegations against Keir Starmer in Covid and whether he had broken Covid rules over that beer he had on a visit up to the north-east, this has been put into an independent process.
“In his case, it was a police investigation. In this case, referring this to the independent ethical adviser means that Angela Rayner can now wait to see what the result of that investigation is.”
Rayner’s council considers striking her off electoral roll

The Deputy Prime Minister has repeatedly claimed that her main home is in her constituency of Ashton-under-Lyne, but she has recently sold her stake in the property to buy a flat in Hove, East Sussex.
The telegraph reported that Tameside council received a letter objecting to Ms Rayner’s place on the electoral roll in Ashton-under-Lyne.
A spokesman said: “An objection letter has been received and is currently being considered by the Electoral Registration Officer.”

In the statement, Joanna Verrico, managing director said: “We acted for Ms Rayner when she purchased the flat in Hove. We did not and never have given tax or trust advice. It’s something we always refer our clients to an accountant or tax expert for.
“The stamp duty for the Hove flat was calculated using HMRC’s own online calculator based on the figures and the information provided by Ms Rayner.
“That’s what we used and it told us we had to pay £30,000 based on the information provided to us. We believe that we did everything correctly and in good faith. Everything was exactly as it should be.
“We probably are being made scapegoats for all this and I have got the arrows stuck in my back to show it. We are not an inexperienced firm, but we’re not qualified to give advice on trust and tax matters and we advise clients to seek expert advice on these.”

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Some of you may have seen the photos of the vandalism of the Deputy Prime Minister’s home this morning.

Electoral Commission releases Q2 party donations
15:30 , Tom WatlingDonations to the Conservatives fell between April and June this year as parties declared £11 million in support, figures from the Electoral Commission have shown.
The Tories received £2.9 million in private donations in the second quarter of the year, down from £3.4 million in the first three months of 2025.
A third of the Conservatives’ total came in the form of a £1 million donation from video game entrepreneur Jez San, following an earlier £1 million gift to the party in February.
The party also received £250,000 from its current treasurer, Graham Edwards, and another £200,000 from businessman Kamal Pankhania, half personally and half through one of his companies, Westcombe Homes.
Despite the fall in donations, the Conservatives still out-raised Labour, which received £2.6 million in donations, slightly more than the £2.4 million it declared between January and March.
More than half of that figure came from trade unions, including £746,000 from Unite, which has threatened to “re-examine” its relationship with Labour over the Government’s handling of a long-running strike by refuse workers in Birmingham.
Other donations included £442,000 from the GMB union, £246,000 from Usdaw and £106,000 from the Communication Workers Union.
Labour’s largest private donation during the period came in the form of £80,000 from property company Activepine, owned by Birmingham-based businessman Maqbool Ahmed.
Donations to the Liberal Democrats fell by around half, to just £773,597, while despite Reform UK’s consistent lead in the polls, donations to Nigel Farage’s party remained relatively steady at £1.4 million.

Home Office asks for delay to Epping hearing
10:46 , Tom WatlingThe Home Office has asked the High Court to postpone the hearing of Epping Forest District Council’s legal action against the owner of the Bell Hotel in Epping by six weeks.
The council is taking legal action against Somani Hotels over the use of the Essex hotel as accommodation for asylum seekers and had a temporary injunction granted by the High Court last month overturned by the Court of Appeal on Friday.
A full trial of the claim is scheduled for October, after which an injunction could be issued, but barristers for the Home Office asked the court on Thursday to push the case back by six weeks to allow the council and Somani Hotels to “reflect on the legal position now established by the Court of Appeal”.
Edward Brown KC, for the department, said: “There has been a material change of circumstances since the matter was last before this court.
“The Court of Appeal has set out what the correct position is as a matter of law in relation to the sole planning harm relied upon by Epping (Forest District Council), namely the fact of protest.
“There is no need for a speedy trial because there is no interim injunction in place.”

Labour says Rayner tax scandal different from previous Tory issues
10:09 , Tom WatlingConservative politicians have been quick to accuse Angela Rayner and the Labour party of hypocrisy over their defence for the deputy PM despite her stamp duty scandal.
Nadhim Zahawi retweeted on Wednesday a video of Ms Rayner saying she and her children were “distressed” by the latest scandal, asking: “Did you think about my children?”
Ms Rayner led a campaign against Mr Zahawi when he was accused of tax errors, though the figure was considerably more, at around £5 million. It cost Mr Zahawi his job as Tory Party chairman.
Defending Ms Rayner against the accusations of hypocrisy this morning, education secretary Bridget said the case was different from scandals under the previous Conservative government, saying: “What we saw in some of those cases in the past was a lack of scrutiny and a lack of transparency.
“The Deputy Prime Minister has sought to be transparent, has set out in some detail, which has been difficult given that it relates to her family, extensive information.”

Reeves declines to say stamp duty tax rules too complicated

Asked whether the row over Angela Rayner’s tax affairs showed stamp duty was too complex, the Chancellor told broadcasters: “Angela tried to do the right thing and, of course, it is incumbent on all of us to try to properly understand the rules, and she is now working to make sure that the correct tax is paid.”

“Anyone that saw Angela’s statement yesterday, saw her interview yesterday, I think will have a lot of sympathy with some of the challenging family circumstances around this, around Angela’s disabled son, but of course, it is right that people pay their right amount of tax.”

The two-day, unofficial inquiry will be live streamed from London and has been designed to look at Britain’s legal responsibilities for what has happened in Gaza over the past nearly two years, including whether the UK provided cover support for Israel and whether the government’s actions match any legal obligations to prevent a genocide.
The United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied territories, Francesca Albanese, and a former Foreign Office whistleblower will give evidence.
While the tribunal holds no official weight, it will be a pain for Sir Keir Starmer as his party seeks to retain the backing of the leftwing and Muslim voters at the next election.
Mr Corbyn is an outspoken champion of the plight of Palestinians and has been a regular at the demonstrations in London.

Minister won't say Rayner will still be in post at Christmas

Asked whether Ms Rayner would still be in the role, the Education Secretary told LBC she would not “speculate on or pre-judge” the outcome of an investigation by the Prime Minister's ethics adviser.
She said: “We've got a process that's under way with the independent adviser.
“I'm not going to get into hypotheticals or speculate. I'm sorry to disappoint you. I'm just not going to do it. That process will run its course.”
