Rachel Gorry: The heartbreaking story of Irish influencer from tragic loss of husband to vile abuse from trolls

Offaly influencer Rachel Gorry will be sitting down with Ryan Tubridy tonight to tell her story - which is absolutely heartbreaking.

Gorry tragically lost her husband Daniel, had been battling oesophageal cancer since his initial diagnosis in 2018, on April 1, 2020.

His initial prognosis was one to five years, which was later reduced to just one year. The couple were then told he would be lucky to see Christmas.

He received the shock diagnosis after he had to spend a week in a Portuguese hospital while on holidays because he was in excruciating pain.

Daniel had been going to his doctor in Ireland since June because of what he thought was a gut infection.

One year after his passing, the 29-year-old launched a fundraiser in Daniel’s memory – to raise money for Tullamore Hospital’s oncology ward, and the Oesophageal Cancer Fund.

The initial fundraising target was €5k - but Rachel was stunned as donations poured in, with the total going past the €180k mark at time of writing, a major boost for the charities.

Rachel and Daniel were childhood sweethearts and shared three daughters Leah, 9, Holly, 5, and three-year-old Hannah.

Gorry has also been outspoken about anonymous trolls on social media.

Rachel launched her Instagram account last January – and has since amassed over 209,000 followers.

She has been targeted by a number of trolls since then.

Rachel has bravely spoken about the grief she experienced in the wake of her husbands death and some of the cruel messages she received in the aftermath.

"I don't know who is behind the page but the person was messaging me and saying my 'crocodile tears' and just calling me 'the merry widow' and just all these nasty messages."

She tearfully added:

"I just wanted to come on and address it, it's not new to me it's been going on a while and they obviously have a grudge and don't think I'm doing things right.

"I just think people setting up these pages and dogging people out of it you don't know the effect.

"Look I'm fine because I know I'm doing the best that I can and I feel like I'm grieving the best I can and I'm doing the best for myself and the best for my kids.
