Rachael Bletchly: Meghan and Harry want to have their cake and eat it

You could almost hear the Buckingham Palace windows rattling as Harry and Meghan slammed the door on life in Britain.

Just four weeks ago the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were sticking to the official line about “dividing their time between the UK and Canada”.

They told us they were forging a future as “progressive” royals – serving the Queen on the one hand while pursuing their humanitarian mission.

And, as they settled into a wealthy pal’s £10million Vancouver mansion, their 15 dedicated Buckingham Palace staff were desperately trying to make sure the Sussexes have their cake and eat it.

But Harry and Meghan had already lost their appetite for Victoria sponge at teatime.]

They could smell all those free maple cookies and American pie.

And just look at how they’ve started feeding off fatcat bankers at a summit in Miami hosted by JP Morgan.

So now we know what “life out of the spotlight” means for the struggling Sussexes.

Turning up at billionaires’ bashes to bang on about mental health, Princess Diana’s death and saving the planet – for a hefty fee.

Meanwhile back in Blighty, 15 members of staff are negotiating redundancy pay-offs.

Because Harry and Meghan have stopped pretending they want to be part-time royals and are closing down their Buckingham Palace office.

But before they go, some of those axed aides will still have to organise the farewell engagements lined up for the Sussexes.

They include the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey on March 9, which the Queen asked them to attend.

The monarch, who was so hurt by Megxit, wants to see Harry standing beside his brother William at the very heart of her family, before he finally quits the Firm.

A royal source said: “The Queen is hoping everyone will put on a united front, even though there’s still tension behind closed doors.”

But then the palace portals will open again, so the self-serving Sussexes can go hunting for more pie.

And I hope someone slams it behind them with the resounding message: “Good riddance.”
