Rachael Bland's widower Steve feels 'no guilt' about finding love again

Rachael Bland's widower Steve Bland has found love again.

BBC journalist Rachael passed away aged 40 in September 2018 after a battle with breast cancer, leaving behind her husband and their five-year-old son Freddie.

Last week Steve went Instagram official with nurse practitioner Amy - who wants to keep her surname private - and has detailed how they met and became a couple.

Steve has explained that he thinks about his beloved late wife Rachael daily but feels "no guilt" about moving on as he "knows she would be happy" that he is living his life.

Steve detailed how he met Amy in Manchester in November last year at a conference where he was taking to the stage to discuss the effect cancer had on his family, during a chat with MailOnline.

The pair went onto exchange Instagram details which led to them then swapping numbers and exchanging texts.

The proud father explained that Amy came to visit him a number of times in the run up to Christmas but only when his son Freddie was in bed and then months of dating Steve decided he was ready to introduce his little man Freddie to Amy and they met in February.

Steve explained: "We took our time but, of course, my life revolves around Freddie so it's difficult to get to know someone properly without involving them in his life, too.

"Going out in the evening is a military operation for a lone parent, organising babysitters, and my parents are a huge help, looking after Freddie when I go to London for work, but I don't want to put upon them too much, so Amy would mostly come to us."

He also added that Rachael would have been grateful for Amy being there for Freddie as "she wanted Freddie to have a mother figure in his life, so they were in no doubt that she would have been on board with it."

Last week, Steve's Instagram announcement was met with kind words and support from his social media followers.

Alongside a snap of himself and new sweetheart Amy, he wrote: "I know I did this on stories a couple of weeks ago but they come and go in a flash.

"With a bit of luck this Wonder Woman will stick with us for a bit longer than that.

"Someone once told me that the issue of dating for widows and widowers is something that divides people right down the middle. And that’s fine. Some people want to wear their wedding rings forever, and some want to find a new happiness.

"Either way, it’s your decision. But I’m finding that, while it’s not always easy, there is plenty of happiness to be found if you go looking for it. And I reckon I’ve found it.....even if she does tell me (in jest I hope) that she’s only with me because of Freddie!

"Amy, thank you for taking on all that Freddie and I bring. We both think the world of you."
