Rachael Blackmore targeting racing return as jockey backed to win BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award

Rachael Blackmore is aiming to return to action in the "next couple of weeks" after more than two months on the sidelines.

The Grand National-winning jockey suffered a fractured ankle and a hip injury in a bad fall at Killarney back in July just months after being crowned champion jockey at the Cheltenham Festival before winning the Aintree showpiece.

Blackmore is hoping to be back riding out before the end of September prior to returning to race riding a few weeks later.

She told RTE: "The recovery has gone really well and the doctors are all happy with my progress, so I'd say I'll be riding out maybe by the end of the month and hopefully back racing in the next couple of weeks.

"It's part and parcel of our job, unfortunately.

"I'm just glad it didn't happen in April or March last year."

Meanwhile, Blackmore is being backed to become the first Irish sportsperson to win the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award.

The talented jockey was backed into a short 7/4 from 10/1 following her Grand National success but since drifted out to 5/1.

That all changed this week however as BoyleSports traders reported a new burst of support with her chances now into 11/4.

Never has an Irish sportsperson won this award and the last jockey to win it was back in 1967 when George Moore from Australia landed the title.

Blackmore is also fancied to become the RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year winner with those odds at 4/6.

She has drifted from a short 1/100 however as boxer Kellie Harrington was hammered into 6/4 following her gold medal win at the Olympics.

The Dublin boxer was 100/1 prior to the Tokyo Games.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: "Punters are starting to get behind the idea of Rachael Blackmore becoming the first Irish sportsperson to win the BBC Overseas Personality of the Year award following her history-making year as a jockey.

"Blackmore became the first woman to not only win the top jockey title at Cheltenham but also became the first woman ever to win the biggest race in the world, the Grand National. The Irish star is 11/4 from 5/1 for the BBC Overseas SPOTY title."
