Race against time to save trapped dog from incoming tide

Firefighters managed to rescue a dog trapped in rocks  on a Wirral beach before the tide came in and drowned her.

Crews were called out to New Brighton beach at around 7.10pm on Friday evening after reports that a dog was in distress.

A beagle, named Molly, had become wedged in rocks against the sea wall, between the beach and the marine lake.

The dog had fallen while out for a walk with her owner.

Station Manager Andy Blythe said: “There was a cavity under the rocks of approximately six foot which prevented Molly from climbing back out.

"The sea was at low water at the time of the incident occurring but a high spring tide was due in around midnight which would have submerged the rocks the dog was trapped under.

“Firefighters from Wallasey, Birkenhead and our search and rescue team worked very hard alongside members of the Wirral and Flint Coastguard Teams to release Molly safely after approximately one hour and 20 minutes.

“Crews used a combination of hydraulic rescue equipment and manual tirfor winches to move rocks sufficiently to create space for a firefighter to reach down and retrieve Molly. She was reunited with its owner having suffered no injuries.”

Crews left the scene at 8.46pm.
