The winners of the BBC travel series Race Across the World have revealed that they were “heartbroken” by the race’s conclusion.
In Race Across the World, five couples competed to see who could make the fastest journey across South America without using air travel.
Eventual winners Jamiul and Emon revealed to Metro that they were disappointed when fellow contestants Jen and Rob were forced to drop out of the race.
“The emotions that Jen and Rob expressed were heartbreaking but for me and my uncle at that point, we were doing it for a bigger reason, much more than ourselves,” said the pair.
“Especially with Jen and Rob because we spent the most time with them at checkpoints and we crossed our paths with them the most. The way it finished, it was heartbreaking and we did feel bad.”
They also said that the exit of mother-and-son team Jo and Sam was “such a downer”.
“It’s just not something that we wanted, we just wanted everyone to finish together,” they added.
In the interview, Jamiul and Emon said they would be donating half their £20,000 prize money to the homeless kids of South America.
They claimed to have kept their victory a secret until the episode was aired – even from members of their own families.
Series two of Race Across the World concludes on BBC Two on Sunday 3 May 2020 with a roundup episode reflecting on the contestants’ journeys.
