Rabbit stuck on ledge in Nottingham city centre dies after failed rescue

A rabbit which was trapped on the edge of a tall building in the city centre has died despite RSPCA and the fire service working "extremely hard" to rescue it.

The rabbit, which was believed to be living in a drain pipe on the side of the Trinity Square car park, was spotted by workers in the E.ON building opposite May 10.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene in Burton Street at around 1pm and attempted to rescue to small mammal alongside the RSPCA.

Martin Aldred, watch manager at the London Road fire station who was at the scene, said the rabbit had entered a "void area" and could not be reached, and the RSPCA said it seemed "happy and alert".

Another rescue attempt took place on May 13, but again was unsuccessful.

However, the RSPCA confirmed on May 16 the rabbit had died after workers at E.ON reported that it was "very clearly dead on its side" on the edge of the car park.

A spokeswoman for the RSPCA said: "We have been made aware that sadly this rabbit has died.

"This is not the outcome that anyone wanted and we’d like to reassure the kind members of the public who reported this to us that ourselves and the fire services tried extremely hard to bring the rabbit to safety over a period of several days."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said it will not be commenting having placed the matter in the hands of the RSPCA.
