Rabbi Matondo Rangers transfer imminent after Wales winger 'completes' medical and agrees terms

Rabbi Matondo has reportedly completed his Rangers medical ahead of joining the Ibrox club.

The Welsh international has been locked in talks with the Glasgow club. He was left out of Schalke’s squad that travelled to Austria for a pre-season training camp in order to put the finishing touches on his switch to the Scottish Premiership.

Matondo has now reportedly undergone the necessary medical tests in Manchester according to Sport1 journalist Patrick Berger. The former Cardiff City man will now travel to Glasgow in order to put pen to paper after personal terms were agreed, and will move for a fee understood to be €3million.

He’ll become Giovanni van Bronckhorst ’s fourth summer signing as he gears up to wrestle the league title back from Celtic and qualify for the Champions League group stages. Matondo will join fellow new faces John Souttar, Antonio Colak, Tom Lawrence in royal blue this season after finding himself out of favour at Schalke following their return to the Bundesliga.

Van Bronckhorst was keen to increase his options in the wide areas. Ianis Hagi is expected to be out for the remainder of the year after suffering a serious knee injury last season. Scott Wright has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, although hit form towards the end of last season with a goal in the Scottish Cup final win over Hearts.

Joe Aribo’s departure leaves a big gap to fill. The Nigerian international joined Southampton at the weekend in a £6million deal, which could rise to £10million with add-ons. Aribo was often deployed on either side of a front three under van Bronckhorst and Steven gerrard, and was required to fill in as an emergency striker after Alfredo Morelos’ season-ending injury last term.
