Two stealth fighter jets will be training over Canberra on Thursday.

Royal Australian Air Force F-35A Lightning II aircraft from No. 3 Squadron, based at RAAF Base Williamtown, will conduct diversion training into Canberra Airport.

The planes are expected to be at the airport at 2pm, although Defence says weather and operational availability may affect the timing.

Up to two aircraft will conduct circuit training within the Canberra airport area and then depart to the north to return to RAAF Base Williamtown.

The F-35A Lightning II is the Australian Defence Force's first fifth-generation air combat capability. It is a "highly advanced multi-role, supersonic, stealth fighter which will meet Australia's requirements to defeat current and emerging threats".

"Diversion training is an essential part of pilot training on fast jet aircraft to ensure pilots are trained to land at different airfields in all weather conditions," Defence said.

"Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military activity, and Air Force appreciates the ongoing support of the Canberra community during these training activities."

Local residents are requested not to call Canberra Airport directly for updated timings, Defence says.
