R rate may have risen above one in Bristol region

The R rate in the South West may have risen above one.

R – the measure of how many new people are infected by each coronavirus case – has reached 0.7 to 1.1 in the region, according to Government figures released on July 10.

If the R number is above one, it means an outbreak can grow exponentially.

Last week's Government figures estimated R in the South West to be between 0.7 and one.

Across England, the figure is now at 0.8 to one, following a rise across the South.

It comes after the night-time economy was allowed to reopen last weekend.

But the estimated growth rate - a figure which reflects how quickly the number of infections is changing day by day - in the South West has dropped.

Last week it was between minus seven per cent and plus two per cent - it is now between minus six per cent and plus one per cent.

Bristol's cases rose by three on July 10, reaching 1,289.

South Gloucestershire's cases have remained at 743, North Somerset at 909, and Bath and North East Somerset at 336.
