R&B star R Kelly has pleaded not guilty to multiple sexual abuse charges.

The singer’s lawyer, Steven Greenberg, entered the not guilty plea on his client’s behalf in a Chicago courtroom on Monday.

The 52-year-old is charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving four females, including three who were underage when prosecutors allege that the abuse occurred.

He has denied wrongdoing and his lawyer said he is confident the singer will be vindicated.

Kelly's next court date has been scheduled for March 22.

A bond-court judge on Saturday set bail for the singer at $1 million, with Mr Greenberg saying he was braced for the possibility that the total could be higher.

Kelly is required to pay 10 per cent of the total before he can be released.

The Grammy-winning artist was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008 and has denied wrongdoing.
