R Kelly latest: Musician back behind bars for failing to pay child support

R.Kelly is back behind bars for failing to pay child support to his ex-wife.

The singer, 52, owes $161,000 (£122,000) to Andrea Kelly and their three children.

He was taken into custody following a hearing in Chicago yesterday and will not be released until he has paid the full amount, a court spokesman said.

It came as CBS This Morning aired an extraordinary interview with the singer in which he tearfully and angrily denied allegations of sexual abuse.

He was charged last month with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims, including three who were underage at the time of the alleged offences.

The singer pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was released after three nights in jail when someone posted his $100,000 bail.

Kelly’s publicist Darryll Johnson said the singer had gone to the latest hearing, prepared to pay up to $60,000 (£45,000) in child support.

But the judge wanted the whole amount, which Kelly does not have because he has been unable to work, according to Mr Johnson.

He added that the singer went to the hearing “in good spirits, expecting to walk out” but was now “depressed, deflated and upset”.

In 2009, Kelly was ordered to make monthly payments of $20,833 to Ms Kelly in a hearing that he failed to attend, CNN reported.

A court spokesman said he would appear in court again on Wednesday over the unpaid child support.

Kelly was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008.
