R. Kelly denies bribing someone to fake ID so he could marry Aaliyah aged 15

R. Kelly pleaded not guilty to bribing someone to make a fake ID for Aaliyah so he could marry her at 15.

The singer, now 52, married teen pop star Aaliyah in a secret ceremony in 1994 at a hotel, in Chicago.

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was just 15 years old when she was wed to the musician more than a decade ago.

Their marriage was annulled in February 1995; her family were said to have filed for the annulment of the marriage less than a year after it took place.

The marriage was annulled on the grounds Aaliyah was underage.

Now R. Kelly has entered a not guilty plea to allegations he bribed someone to make a fake ID for Aaliyah before he walked her down the aisle.

The songwriter made the plea via a video link from behind bars where he has been held in Chicago jail.

He is charged with paying for a fraudulent identification document for someone identified as "Jane Doe" on August 30 in 1994.

The star is accused of getting the said fake ID from an unnamed Illinois government employee.

R. Kelly married Aaliyah just a day later when he was the age of 27.

The teen pop star died aged 22 in a plane smash on August 25 in 2001 in the Bahamas.

Aaliyah had just wrapped up filming her music video for her single Rock the Boat when she was killed.

R. Kelly wrote and produced Aaliyah's debut album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number.

Earlier this year, his lawyer Steven Greenberg told ABC news his client had "no idea" Aaliyah was 15 when they married.
