Quote of the day by Langston Hughes: ‘I have discovered in life that there are ways of getting almost…’ – American poet on dreams, determination and finding a way forward

Some dreams arrive with a clear map. Others begin as little more than a stubborn feeling that somewhere else, something better, or something different must be possible. The route may be uncertain, the obstacles real and the destination far away, but sometimes the most important thing is simply refusing to stop looking for a way forward.

American poet Langston Hughes understood that kind of determination. His own journey took him from the segregated American Midwest to the literary world of the Harlem Renaissance and eventually to international recognition. Along the way, he worked ordinary jobs, travelled widely and turned the experiences of Black Americans into poetry, fiction, essays and journalism.

Quote of the day by Langston Hughes: “I have discovered in life that there are ways of getting almost anywhere you want to go, if you really want to go.”

Who was Langston Hughes?

Born February 1, 1901, in Joplin, Missouri, Hughes became one of the defining voices of the Harlem Renaissance, the extraordinary flowering of Black literature, music and art in 1920s New York. He grew up in several places, including Topeka, Kansas, before moving to Lincoln, Illinois, and later attended Columbia University, although he left without graduating.

Hughes was already writing poetry as a teenager. His work eventually appeared in The Crisis , the magazine of the NAACP, helping establish him as an important young literary voice.

Through works such as The Weary Blues , Montage of a Dream Deferred and The Ways of White Folks , Hughes explored Black identity, racism, dreams, music and everyday life in America, helping make his work central to the literary legacy of the Harlem Renaissance.

Meaning of the quote

The quote is ultimately about determination. Hughes does not promise that every destination is easy to reach. The important word is “ways.” There may be more than one route toward a goal, and when the obvious path is blocked, another may have to be found.

The phrase “if you really want to go” adds another layer. Genuine commitment, Hughes suggests, changes the way we respond to obstacles. A person who truly wants something may become more willing to learn, adapt, wait, start again or take an unexpected route.

It is not a guarantee of success. Instead, it is an argument for persistence: do not confuse the disappearance of one path with the disappearance of every path.
