Quiz viewers in disbelief at Who Wants To be a Millionaire's original title

ITV Quiz viewers were left in disbelief as the thrilling three-part show revealed what Who Wants To be a Millionaire? was almost called.

The limited series follows the shocking true case of Charles Ingram, who cheated on the hit quiz show in 2001.

The first of three episodes, which aired tonight, revealed that the pilot for the popular show was originally named Cash Mountain.

Contestants on the show would have to answer 21 questions of increasing difficulty and increasing cash values - from £1 going all the way to £1million.

However, the working title was scrapped and renamed Who Wants To be a Millionaire? with the format also changed for players to answer 15 questions.

This remained in place up until 2007 when the structure was lowered to 12 questions to get to the top prize.

As ITV's Quiz debuted on Monday night, the original game show name left fans baffled with many admitting they were glad it hadn't stuck.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "My god the voice is spot on isn't it #quiz @michaelsheen and thank god they didn't stick with 'Cash Mountain' [laughing emoji]".

Another penned: "Cash mountain, what an awful name for a game show #Quiz ".

A third wrote: "How good is #Quiz on @ITV Remember this program starting like it was yesterday.

"Never realised #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire was originally going to be called Cash Mountain!!"

And a fourth shared: "I love #quiz but I loved finding out how it all got off the ground and what it could’ve been... cash mountain... wild! Haha! Can we have more dramas like this about the birth of tv shows".

*Quiz airs tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.
