Plane crashes, drinks spiking and murders – the 1990s were a dangerous time to be a soap star in the UK. The decade saw producers attempt to shake up traditional storylines by injecting dramatic film-style scenarios into their scripts.
Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Brookside were well established by this point, EastEnders was still finding its feet and Hollyoaks launched with the aim of attracting younger audiences. New characters and their families arrived on the respective blocks, with some staying on ever since.
