Quiz! Can You Name Every U.S. Open Venue Since 1980?

Erin Hills during a practice round for the 2017 US Open.

The first U.S. Open, the United States Open Championship to give it its full name, was played on October 4, 1895, at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. This was played over what was then a 2,755-yard nine-hole course (the course was expanded to 18 holes in 1899). The tournament was played over a single day as a 36-hole strokeplay event, which 10 professionals and one amateur entered. Englishman Horace Rawlins won by two shots, with a score of 173.

The event was held a day after the first US Amateur Championship had been contested around the same course. This is the only time that Newport Country Club has hosted a US Open, but it was the venue for the centenary of the US Amateur Championship in 1995, won by defending champion Tiger Woods. It has also hosted the US Women’s Open, in 2006, and the US Senior Open of 2024.

It is the first of 54 courses to hold the US Open, a tournament which now traditionally finishes on the third Sunday in June. Twenty-one of these courses have hosted since 1980. Can you name them all? You have ten minutes.
