Quiz athletics legend Steve Cram to support Beatson Cancer Charity

SPORTS fans in Monklands will get the chance to quiz a legendary athlete - and bid for some exclusive memorabilia - this Thursday night.

The Beatson Cancer Charity will hold its latest "Beatson Banter" online event with special guest Steve Cram CBE.

Steve is one of the UK’s biggest sports personalities and he will be under starters order at 8pm on Thursday for a virtual fan exclusive Q&A.

The fundraiser is a one-hour event on Zoom, tickets are £10 and the audience can ask Steve any question.

Steve’s career spans more than three decades and he has enjoyed stellar success both on and off the track, with many people remembering him from his competing days alongside Steve Ovett and Sebastien Coe.

Steve’s love affair with athletics began when aged 17 he participated in the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

His many achievements include six gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and the European and World Championships and following an incredible season in 1983, Steve was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, one of the few athletes to have won the award, and in 1986 he was awarded an MBE.

Now, more than ever, Beatson Cancer Charity needs your help as fundraising efforts are strained due to the Covid pandemic, and public support of events like this virtual Q&A is crucial in order to help keep the organisation's services running.

Martin Cawley, Beatson Cancer Charity CEO, said: "As a result of the Covid-19 crisis, we have had to make significant changes to the way we operate. We are delighted to continue to deliver some fun events digitally.

"We can still have a positive impact on patients' lives and support our NHS colleagues at the Beatson. We continue to fund radiographers and clinical nurse specialists who are working harder than ever to provide enhanced care and support to vulnerable cancer patients.

"We are doing all we can to continue to help our colleagues at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and continue to fun life-saving research."

Steve Cram CBE added: "Being able to remain active and healthy is so important for us all, now more than ever.

"I'm grateful for my career and being able to continue doing the work I love. I've become so aware that many people are displaying an attitude of gratitude and Beatson Cancer Charity need our support to enable them to continue their most important work.

"I'm looking forward to stepping up and sharing my experiences, and if you or someone you love has been supported by Beatson Cancer Charity, I do hope you can join us.

"I'm also looking forward to questions from the audience; live interviews are always interesting!"
