Quirky Stornoway croft house named BBC Scotland's Home of the Year for 2022

A quirky croft house on Stornoway has been named Scotland’s Home of the Year for 2022.

New Tolsta was crowned the winner of the annual BBC Scotland show during an hour-long finale shown earlier this evening.

The property, which is based on the north east coast of Isle of Lewis, was bought by current owner Tom Hickman in 2006 - which is 37 years after it was lasted lived in.

Artist Tom then painstakingly restored the croft house to its former glory - while adding his own distinctive style throughout.

The home follows a traditional two-up, two-down layout, boasting a beautiful kitchen, living room and bathroom on the ground floor with two bedrooms upstairs.

It is also filled with Tom’s artwork and is mixed with traditional pieces of furniture.

New Tolsta was named the unanimous winner of the show by all three judges - lifestyle blogger Kate Spiers, interior designer Anna Campbell-Jones and architect and lecturer Michael Angus.

The home fended off competition from Fort William, Kippen, Kirkwall, Edinburgh, Elsrickle, Helensburgh and Fife.

Anna and Michael were in tears during the final selection of the winning home in the surroundings of Glasgow’s House for an Art Lover.

Homeowner Tom said: “Well I have to admit it does bring an unexpected smile - winning is not something I’m used to.

“I’m certainly surprised, but way down deep somewhere there is a little voice saying ‘at last!'” As artists, we are all our own worst critics, so yes it’s nice to receive some praise.

“I was fascinated to firstly see Anna, Michael and Kate’s nicely understated reaction the exterior, and they did well to not judge the book by its cover.

“It was strange not being able to welcome them, but now I see I needn’t have worried as my home did that for me.

“I’d like to extend an open invitation to them all, should they wish to take a second look and hear some of the stories behind the objects and fabric of my home.”

And there was amazing news for fans of the show, as it was confirmed that filming for the fifth series begins later this month.

Scots wishing to enter their homes into next year’s competition can apply until June 10. More information can be found here.
