Quirky new Japanese cafe opens in Edinburgh city centre selling deep-fried spam katsu

A new Japanese cafe and gift shop has opened on Elm Row in Edinburgh city centre, and it looks absolutely fantastic, not least because of its eclectic and unusual menu.

Kawaneko opened on 7 December and sells Japanese sandwiches with delicious breaded deep-fried fillings, like their pork loin katsu sandwich: outdoor bred pork loin marinated and breaded, deep-fried served with tonkatsu sauce or miso-katsu sauce.

Or if you're feeling even more adventurous, you could try their spam katsu with cheddar cheese sandwich. As you might expect, it features sliced spam and cheese which is breaded and then deep fried before being served in bread with tonkatsu sauce.

Then there's the chicken karaage sandwich: Japanese fried chicken and japanese mao with curry spice.

If you're not in the mood for a sandwich, they also do bento boxes, including one made with breaded and deep-fried oysters (kaki-fry bento).

The desserts are quirky too: they sell a courgette, pistachio and lime cake as well as green tea and white chocolate shortbread.

They also sell Japanese soft drinks, like Chou-lo Sour Apple Fizzy Pop.

On top of all the tasty and unique food, you can also pick up gifts like Japanese mugs and extremely cute pins.

You can find Kawaneko at 62 Elm Row EH7 4AQ: Opening hours are 11:00 - 20:30
