Quirky Edinburgh medieval retreat named as ‘best Airbnb' by Condé Nast travel guide

A medieval retreat in Edinburgh has been named as one the most impressive Airbnbs to stay at, according to Condé Nast Traveller.

The up-market travel guide released their list of the best Airbnbs in The UK and Ireland and the 16th Century Dovecot Cottage was among two capital holiday homes to be named.

The medieval retreat is described on Airbnb as a "quirky and sophisticated" place to stay in a private garden, listed from £155 a night.

The travel guide was impressed by the property's rich history as it used to be a tower that was home to nesting doves.

Now the Bruntsfield Airbnb has been renovated into a one-bedroom property that can sleep four guests due to having a pull-out sofa-bed.

The host describes the unique experience saying: “In central Edinburgh yet tucked-away in a mature private garden, this quirky, sophisticated dovecot is stunning.

“Serene & secluded, it's quietly thrilling. Wooden stairs lead to a tiny bedroom in the tower, where cedar-wood, lit ancient dove-nesting boxes & a garden view surround a double bed.

Downstairs there is a sleek bathroom; a rustic-chic kitchen beneath mezzanine; a pull-out sofa-bed and a mysterious cavern can be glimpsed beneath a glass floor-panel.

“It's a relaxing peaceful hideaway with a tranquil, scented garden terrace.

Condé Nast also named a property on Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile as one of their favourites.

Titles the Classical Apartment on the Royal Mile, this Airbnb is like saying over at an art gallery, as the loft is filled with impressive family portraits and heirlooms.

It’s also the perfect location for a readers retreat as it has hundreds of stacks worth of books.

The host said: “It’s a beautiful space to curl up with a book and glass of wine.”
