Quiet residential street rocked after gunshot hits house

A quiet residential street in Netherton was rocked after a gunshot was fired at a house on Sunday night.

Merseyside Police was called to Westminster Avenue in Netherton after reports a gun was fired at a house on the residential street.

Police arrived at the scene at 7.15pm to find damage to a house window and evidence that a gunshot had been fired.

No injuries were reported to emergency services after the incident.

An investigation was launched and officers remained at the scene to carry out CCTV, forensic and house-to-house enquiries to speak to the local community.

Today a cordon remained covering a large part of Westminster Avenue.

Merseyside Police cars guarded the cordon near the top and bottom of the street, while an inner cordon could be seen covering a number of houses with another police car parked outside.

It was unclear which house on the street had been hit by the gunshot - and police forensic teams couldn't be seen outside any house this morning.

Residents who lived inside the cordon could enter and leave their properties as long as they notified police of their presence.

One resident who lived on Westminster Avenue but outside the cordon told the ECHO they didn't hear any gunshot or commotion until police officers arrived on the scene.

The resident, who did not want to be named, added the incident wasn't common for the road.

Merseyside Police has appealed for anyone with any information to come forward.

Detective Inspector Catherine Walsh said: “These are the early stages of an investigation, during which we are working to establish exactly what happened tonight, and preserve any evidence.

“If you were in the area, passing by or live locally, you could be able to help.

"Your CCTV, dashcam, doorbell footage may present us with opportunities to find those responsible for this incident and quickly take them and their weapon off the streets.

“Gun crime in Merseyside has fallen dramatically in the past few years, due in no small part to those people prepared to speak to us about such incidents, directly or anonymously.

"However you choose to tell us, please come forward and we will take action.”
