Quick thinking Irish Coast Guard member rescues swimmer who collapsed on Dollymount beach

A swimmer who collapsed on Dollymount beach last Thursday was rescued after being spotted by a member of the Irish Coast Guard.

The quick-thinking crew member, who was out exercising, called 112 as soon as he saw the swimmer fall after exiting the sea and asked for assistance from the Coast Guard Marine Rescue coordination centre.

First aid was performed on the patient who was then transferred to hospital via the National Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson for the Irish Coast Guard Howth said on Facebook: "Right Place Right Time, on Thursday last while out for exercise within his 5km on the Bull wall Dollymount, one of our team members witnessed a swimmer collapsing after exiting the sea.

"He immediately called 112 and requested assistance from the Coast Guard Marine Rescue coordination centre who sent backup from the Howth Coast Guard unit and requested an ambulance from @ambulancenas.

"First aid was administered and the patient was transferred to hospital via the @nationalambulanceservice.

"If you see someone in trouble on the Cliffs, Coast or Water, do not hesitate, dial 112 or 999 and ask for Coast Guard."
