Quick and easy ways to get rid of a cold, according to experts

Hundreds of thousands of people across the country are reporting what they're calling 'the worst cold ever' after almost two years of avoiding the viruses, thanks to lockdown.

Fortunately, whether your cold is mild or nasty, the experts have advice on how you can help banish it in a few hours.

Back in 2019 experts shared their advice on how to get rid of a cold in 24 hours.

Professor Ron Eccles, a cold-and-flu expert and emeritus professor at Cardiff University, said to start the day with a hot shower to clear your nose and sinuses and ease your aching limbs.

A breakfast high in vitamin C is recommended - oranges, orange juice, kiwi and berries.

Nutritionist Amanda Ursell advised avoiding caffeinated drinks - such as tea and coffee - as they will deyhdrate you. But she advised snacking on buts - packed with selenium - to support the immune system.

Nutritional therapist Julie Silver recommended a saltpipe - an inhaler - to alleviate coughing and sneezing. They can be picked up online for around £15.

GP Dr Sarah Brewer recommended keeping warm, and staying indoors as much as possible, while ear, nose and throat specialist Adam Frosh recommended nutritious soup for lunch., and plenty of water to stay hydrated.

You should also avoid alcohol, again to avoid dehydration.

In the evening, Amanda Ursell recommends a curry as the hot spices will help cler your nose.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen will help you feel better.

Over-the-counter cough and cold experts Vicks have 15 tips for clearing a cold.

  2. Drink warm liquids
  3. Sleep it off
  4. Meditate
  5. Use saline nasal drops and sprays.
  6. Use a neti pot.
  7. Gargle saltwater
  8. Add moisture to the air
  9. Breathe in some steamy air
  10. Soothe your cough
  11. Adjust your sleeping position
  12. Keep things clean
  13. Eat foods that support your immune system
  14. Eat lots of vegetables, herbs, and spices
  15. Use the right over-the-counter (OTC) meds

Experts at the world-famous Mayo Clinic recommend staying hydrated, resting, a saltwater gargle, saline nasal drops, painkillers, sipping warm liquids, noney, adding moisture to the air and over-the counter remedies.
