Queues in Glasgow as shops re-open but most Scots follow advice to stay away

Despite being closed for three weeks it appears most Scots fought off the temptation to rush to non-essential shops after they re-opened this morning.

There was some queue chaos - including long tailbacks of cars travelling to the Glasgow Fort.

But hotspots like Argyle Street and Buchanan Street remained quiet, with social distancing being adhered to and queues few and far between.

Thousands of stores were able to reopen from 6am on Friday as 11 council areas - including those across Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire - moved down to  level three of lockdown.

That was welcome news for  hard-pressed shopkeepers, but there were fears some businesses may try to compensate for weeks of closures by packing in as many customers as possible.

Retail giants like Primark and TK Maxx were unpredictably quiet, while small queues were seen outside Footlocker and Zara in Glasgow city centre.

That was in stark contrast to the scene in London last week when thousands flocked to high streets on the first weekend of their lockdown easing, with the likes of Regent Street and Oxford Street rammed with shoppers.

It was busier at Glasgow Fort today as queues of drivers were seen lining up on the M8 slip road heading to the  shopping centre  in time for its opening at 9am this morning.

But most shops across the country had security staff manning the doors keeping tabs on numbers.

Professor Jason Leitch, Scotland's national clinical director, last night urged Scots to take care when shops reopen - and they seem to have listened.
