Questions over Hunter TAFE jobs

Changes: TAFE NSW is in the spotlight.

TAFE NSW says the Community and Public Sector Union has misunderstood the number of positions affected in its restructure of two teams.

The CPSU said 43 jobs would be cut across the Belmont, Glendale, Hamilton, Hunter Street and Newcastle campuses, with more cuts on the way at these and other campuses.

A spokeswoman for TAFE NSW said these figures did not reflect proposed job losses.

She said information it provided to staff and unions was about positions affected, not individual people.

"The outcome of the consultation will determine the final structure and will help inform the location of any positions that will change as part of this process," she said.

"Ultimately, we anticipate a net reduction of fewer than 50 positions. The CPSU has misunderstood the information that has been shared with its members, confusing position changes for job losses."

She said changes could include positions regraded due to a change in responsibilities.

She said many affected positions were "location negotiable".

Public Service Association general secretary Stewart Little said "this shortsighted government is executing TAFE in the Hunter region by a thousand cuts".

"18 per cent of the Hunter's youth are currently unemployed, that's four per cent higher than the national average," he said.

"Any responsible state government would be backing TAFEs in the region to the hilt."
