Question Time audience member blasts Tories for 'disregarding working class for decade'

A Question Time audience member was applauded as he blasted the Tories for disregarding the working class for a decade.

The man launched a tirade at the BBC One show's panel that included Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly as he said Brexit was being used a scapegoat.

The audience member's outburst came as the panel discussed leaving the EU after being asked what is the point of "getting Brexit done" if it doesn't solve problems that "normal British people care about".

The man told the panel: "The problems have nothing to with Brexit. The problems have been inflicted by the Tories for the last 10 years.

"You've treated the working class with disregard for 10 years and you're using Brexit as a tool. It's a scapegoat.

"You've treated us with absolute disregard for a long time and it's got nothing to do with Brexit."

The audience member was largely praised on social media for his observations which were called "spot on", but others said he was "talking rubbish".

Mr Cleverly had earlier told the audience the reason Brexit needs to be done is so that the government can invest in areas such as the NHS, police and education.

He said: "Whether we are in the European Union or out of the European Union affects the government's ability to intervene, invest and other things.

“Unless you have a plan for Brexit you can’t have a credible plan for anything else," he added.

Before tonight's show there was a backlash over a potentially all-male line up, meaning a female Labour candidate was chosen to appear in a late swap.

The BBC One programme was criticised for having no women in Thursday night's line-up, with Harriet Harman tweeting: "I thought we sorted this in the last century!"

A BBC statement said the situation was "not ideal" but a female Labour candidate - Laura Pidcock - had to pull out of the programme, presented by Fiona Bruce.

Fellow Labour candidate Anneliese Dodds later  agreed to appear on the high-profile show replacing Jonathan Ashworth.

She joined Mr Cleverly, the SNP's Ian Blackford, Brexit Party chairman Richard Tice and Liberal Democrat Sir Ed Davey.
