Question raised over whether Nigel Owens missed red card in Rugby World Cup opener

A former international has suggested that Nigel Owens should have potentially handed out a red card during today’s opening World Cup match between Japan and Russia.

Jacques Burger, who captained Namibia and played 100 games for Saracens, has posted a clip on social media of an incident during the first-half of the Pool A clash at the Tokyo Stadium.

It shows Japan’s Australian-born second row James Moore seemingly leading with the shoulder in making a hit on a Russian player.

What do you think?

There was no action taken over the incident and the hosts went on to record a 30-10 bonus point victory.

In his post on Twitter, former flanker Burger said: “Looks like the officials missed a potential red card. Imagine what that would have meant in this match.”

Russia, coached by Welshman Lyn Jones, led for most of the first-half, before Japan pulled away with winger Kotaro Matsushima scoring a hat-trick of tries.
