Pierce Brosnan has recalled the time when Quentin Tarantino pitched him an idea for a James Bond film while drunk.
Brosnan, who played 007 between 1995 and 2002, made the revelation during a live Esquire watch-along of Goldeneye.
“It was after Kill Bill Vol 2, and he wanted to meet me, so I went up to Hollywood one day from the beach, and I met him at the Four Seasons,” Brosnan said.
“I got there at 7pm, I like to be punctual. 7.15pm came around, no Quentin, he was upstairs doing press. Someone sent over a martini, so I had a martini, and I waited till 7.30pm, and I thought, where the heck is he? Word came down, apologies, so I thought, okay, I’ll have another martini.”
When Tarantino did eventually arrive, Brosnan admitted that he was rather drunk, and that once the director joined him for a martini or two, they were both “fairly snokkered”.
“He was pounding the table, saying you’re the best James Bond, I wanna do James Bond, and it was very close quarters in the restaurant and I thought, please calm down, but we don’t tell Quentin Tarantino to calm down,” Brosnan said.
While he did not reveal any specifics for Tarantino’s vision of a Bond film, he said he “went back to the shop” and told showrunners but “it wasn’t meant to be”.
“That would be a good one to watch,” he said.
The next James Bond film, No Time to Die, has been postponed until the end of the year amid the coronavirus pandemic. It will mark actor Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007.
