Quentin Blake has created a genius-packed mural for the Science Museum

Legendary children’s book illustrator Quentin Blake has created illustrations of famous scientists for a new mural at the Science Museum.

The artist, who is best known for his work illustrating books by Roald Dahl and David Walliams, has produced drawings of 20 scientists and inventors for a new permanent installation outside the museum’s family-friendly Wonderlab: The Equinor Gallery.

The work takes the form of five panels, each of which hosts likenesses of four scientists and technology trailblazers from the Science Museum Group’s collections, many of whom are shown alongside their creations.

Scientists featured in the artwork include computing pioneer Ada Lovelace, polymath and radiowave innovator Jagadis Chandra Bose, spinning machine inventor Richard Arkwright and pilot Amy Johnson, who is drawn alongside the aircraft she used to make the first solo flight from Britain to Australia.

Blake, who is also the founder of the House of Illustration gallery in King’s Cross, described the commission as “irresistible”.

Quentin Blake’s mural can now be viewed free of charge outside Wonderlab: The Equinor Gallery in the Science Museum. For more information, visit sciencemuseum.org.uk
