Remember the gay couple who broke the internet a few weeks back with their breakup TikTok? In case you’ve been busy touching grass (unlike yours truly), Matt Armato and Beau Ciolino, best known as the gay influencer couple behind @ProbablyThis, announced their split online and folks went hog wild over it, mostly because of the palpable tension and awkwardness, i.e. that fist bump (gays don’t fist bump…).
Anywho! One half of the couple, Matt, has now spoken out about the wild responses to their video.
Speaking on the aptly titled podcast That’s A Gay Ass Podcast, Matt actually defended Beau – who copped most of the backlash due to his chillingly chipper demeanour in the vid and for initiating the aforementioned fist bump that set the internet ablaze
“People have been saying he’s going to go to hell, saying he’s a sociopathic, narcissistic, abusive cheater, and none of those things are true,” Matt clarified.

He admitted that the pair had been handling the online shitstorm differently, mostly because they’d both been perceived differently by the public, with Matt coming off as the hero and Beau coming off as the villain.
“I’ve been given a lot of sympathy, a lot of people saying ‘Team Matt’, in a way that honestly feels a little bad because there’s no teams, we are best friends, we love each other so much,” he continued.
“Beau on the other hand has gotten a lot of negative attention, people are in his DMs telling him to crash into a tree.”

Shortly after their breakup video went viral, Matt jumped on his IG Stories to defend his now-ex from the backlash and thank all their supporters.
“Thank you to everyone who’s reached out with care after our breakup announcement,” he began the Insta statement.
“I know the video has sparked a lot of reactions. This is a deeply painful transition, and while I understand why people are speculating about our dynamic, I don’t want this to become a pile-on against Beau. He is not a villain, he is a human, and a really beautiful one at that. One large point of criticism has been the gap between our apparent demeanours.
“Neither of us was confident addressing this publicly but given that we’ve built our career together as a couple it felt necessary. So what you might see as someone being carelessly giddy I see as nervous posturing-and, sure, a bit of relief. I can’t fault him for that. I too am relieved to be moving on. As we said in the video we are still very close and I feel deeply for him. Please know that there are no teams here. I see your compassion and I appreciate it, but if your support for me looks like tearing him down I don’t want it.”
