Still reeling from a bitter divorce, Ginny Clark retreats to a ramshackle house in London to seek solace in her folklore studies. It doesn't take long before she falls for the eccentric if somewhat unconvincing charms of oddball neighbour Sean. Apparently undaunted by his startling array of social dysfunctions, Ginny shakes off a niggling suspicion that you can "hide anyone inside an Englishman" until a gruesome discovery frames her diffident lover as someone altogether more dangerous. Matthew D'Ancona is sometimes preoccupied with his plot at the expense of his prose, but finely pitched against a backdrop of fairy tales and all things Grimm, the tone is suitably chilling.
