Queensland records seven new community cases of COVID-19

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she is 'very concerned' about the COVID-19 situation in New South Wales.

Queensland has recorded seven new community cases of COVID-19 with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk saying virus creep from New South Wales was very concerning.

All the new cases were in home quarantine and linked to the Delta outbreak, which started at the Indooroopilly State High School, in Brisbane's west.

The new cases are linked to three schools — a Japanese class at St Aidan's Anglican Girls School, Brisbane Grammar School and Ironside State School — with positive cases detected on days 10, 11 and 12.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said the families in home quarantine who had late positive results would need to endure another two weeks at home.

"I'm really sorry for those families, they're going to have to continue to persevere but I'm very, very grateful to them," Dr Young said.

"Having had those cases in quarantine during their infectious period meant we could control this outbreak and stop it spreading to the broader community."

There are now 137 cases in the current Delta cluster.

'Very concerned' about virus creep

Ms Palaszczuk said she hoped to get an update from New South Wales at the National Cabinet meeting today about how it planned to stop the spread of Delta into other states.

"From Queensland's point of view, we are very concerned about how the clusters are continuing to expand," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I think we would need to hear very clearly from New South Wales what their clear plan is for containment.

"The last thing we want to see is this virus spread north, the virus spread south, and spread across the nation.

"So, it's absolutely imperative that New South Wales contains this virus."

Dr Young said "we don't know when a case will come up into our state from New South Wales".

"We saw how rapidly they've had an outbreak develop in the ACT from one case," she said.

From 1:00am Saturday, anyone who arrives in Queensland from the ACT must go into hotel quarantine.

Anyone already in Queensland who has been in the ACT since August 9 should go into home quarantine for 14 days.

There is a total of 158 active cases in Queensland after 35,503 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours.

Out of those tests, 4,266 were in Cairns where lockdown lifted earlier this week.

Of the Queenslanders eligible, 23.07 per cent have had their second dose of the vaccine.

Changes for the border bubble

Queensland Health updated its website late yesterday to advise anyone who lives or works in the seven locked-down New South Wales local government areas [LGAs] in the border bubble zone, could only enter Queensland for a limited number of reasons.

Essential workers to and from those zones no longer include teachers or child care workers, hospitality workers, sales representatives or commercial construction workers on a non-critical project.

"We've seen what having students infected can do."

What are the Delta and Delta Plus COVID-19 variants?

Ms D'Ath said only essential workers from the lockdowned LGAs could cross the border into Queensland.

They include: medical practitioners, emergency health services or emergency services workers, national defence, state security or police workers, freight or logistics operators, emergency infrastructure workers, emergency volunteers, disaster management workers, a critical infrastructure worker, a tradesperson or construction worker for essential or emergency construction or repairs only.
