An internal investigation has been launched after cartons of beer were found in a police vehicle in the remote north-west Queensland community of Doomadgee on Monday.

The town has been under alcohol restrictions for more than a decade.

Photos shared to social media show two cartons of mid-strength beer in the back of a police car in Doomadgee.

Local resident Christopher Toby said he was in bushland looking for native fruits when he spotted a group of people unloading several cartons of alcohol from a car.

Mr Toby said on closer inspection he identified the group as police officers who were not in uniform.

He said a police patrol vehicle was then used to transport beer into Doomadgee.

Current restrictions limit alcohol to two cartons of 30 cans of mid-strength beer per person with no option to purchase alcohol inside the community.

Police confirmed an internal investigation had been launched.

"This investigation will examine any unlawful conduct by police officers including inappropriate use of police vehicles."

Protests were held outside the police station on Monday night.

"We've called for a meeting with the local law enforcement because this isn't right and they need to be held accountable."
