Police bodycam captures terrifying shootout in carpark

A man that Queensland police shot through the scrotum during a shootout in an underground carpark has been found not guilty of attempted murder.

Daniel White-Mayne admitted to pulling a gun out of a bag while he was being arrested on suspicion of stolen goods, but denied he was intending to kill the female officer during the January 2017 incident.

White-Mayne was shot three times, through the thigh and scrotum, when the routine arrest escalated in the underground car park of an apartment block in Surfers Paradise.

A Supreme Court jury in Brisbane deliberated for about a day before returning a not guilty verdict on the charge.

It decided however to convict White-Mayne of attempted striking to resist arrest.

During the trial, jurors were shown bodycam from the officer's colleague.

The female constable, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, testified White-Mayne pointed a gun directly at her after a struggle during his arrest.

"It was held in a position that was ready to fire … it looked like he had his finger around the trigger," she told the court.

The court heard the constable fired up to four times at White-Mayne before her gun jammed and she turned to run.

"I heard a shot and felt pain … I kept going but I believed that I had been shot in the leg," she said.

The officer testified she fell to the ground and felt "paralysed" before she eventually got up.

"After I screamed, I heard the male person say something — words to the effect of, 'you're going to cop this, you dog c***, you're going to die'," she said.

"It was a death threat — I thought I was going to die."

During the evidence it was unclear if a projectile caused her injuries.

White-Mayne's defence barrister Angus Edwards told jurors his client was "no angel" but that he never intended to kill the officer.

The court heard White-Mayne told police he was trying to "scare" the officers so he could get away.
