Queensland border to shut completely to NSW, ACT from Saturday

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

QUEENSLAND will close its border to the Hunter, all of NSW and the ACT from Saturday.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the border closures, which will take effect from 1am Saturday, in a press conference on Wednesday morning.

It comes after the northern state branded greater Sydney, including Central Coast Council, as a hot spot and precluded travel from the area last month.

Ms Palaszczuk said community transmission rates in southern states were a major factor in the move.

"We cannot risk a second wave. We have to act decisively," she said.

"We have to put Queenslanders first."

Queensland recorded one new case of coronavirus overnight.

The 68-year-old Queensland woman was diagnosed with the virus in the past 24 hours and authorities are still investigating the source of the infection.

Queenslanders who return after the closures will have to isolate for 14 days at their own expense.
