A Queensland anaesthetist has been accused of sexually assaulting and photographing unconscious women.

The 59-year-old from Mount Ommaney in Brisbane's south west, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with three counts each of sexual assault and recordings in breach of privacy.

Police have alleged the anaesthetist, who works in Toowoomba, inappropriately touched three women in their 20s while they were unconscious between last November and February this year.

Detectives are asking anyone who thinks they might have been affected to come forward.

In April, the Queensland Office of the Health Ombudsman imposed conditions on the doctor's registration with the Medical Board of Australia, ordering him "not to have contact with female patients".

It also ordered the specialist to provide written confirmation that his employers had been notified of the alleged offences and subsequent charges.

His registration is up for renewal at the end of September.

In a statement, a Darling Downs Health spokesperson said the anaesthetist was not currently employed in Toowoomba and had not worked since April.

"There is nothing more important to us than patient confidentiality as well as patient safety and security," the spokesperson said.

"We will continue to cooperate with police and encourage anyone who thinks they may be affected, or if they have more information, to contact police directly."
