Queensland accountant arrested in Bali sentenced to drug rehab centre

An Indonesian court has sentenced a Queensland accountant to 15 months' detention in a drug rehabilitation centre.

Isaac Emmanuel Roberts was arrested at Bali's international airport in December carrying 14 grams of the drug ice and 14 ecstasy tablets.

He will serve his sentence not in prison but in a local residential drug treatment clinic.

After the sentence was handed down Roberts said it was fair.

"Am I happy? No. I'm depressed," he told media.

"I'm thankful to the Indonesian Government for giving me the chance to rehabilitate.

"It's a big challenge because it's a horrible drug.

"It's fair because they've given me treatment for my illness. I need rehabilitation — I'm very sick."

Roberts told Denpasar District Court he had been addicted to drugs since 2009 and the ice and ecstasy was for his own use.

The three-judge panel believed him, ruling that Roberts was a user, not a dealer.

Roberts was a candidate for the Liberal Democrats at the 2009 federal by-election for the Melbourne seat of Higgins.

With time served, 36-year-old Roberts should be free to return to Australia in less than a year.
