The trial of Isaac Emmanuel Roberts, a Queensland accountant accused of bringing the drugs ice and ecstasy into Bali, has begun, with the 36-year-old telling the court he has had a serious drug addiction since 2009.
A court in Denpasar heard that Mr Roberts was caught at Bali's airport in December carrying 14 grams of crystal methamphetamine and 14 ecstasy tablets.
Mr Roberts claims he is an addict and the drugs were for personal use.
After the prosecution indictment was read to the court, Mr Roberts told the media he was undergoing treatment for addiction while in custody and had now been clean for 10 weeks.
He laughed when asked if he had any advice for anyone considering bringing drugs to Bali.
"Don't. Don't come to Bali with drugs, they are very efficient," he said.
"It's very easy to slip in the habit and unfortunately I did. Methamphetamine is very, very bad.
"If anyone is considering taking methamphetamine do not — it is too good and you will find it very difficult to stop."
Roberts faces a five- to 20-year term for the ice and up to five years for the ecstasy.
At the opening of his trial, prosecutors told the court that they would call four customs officers and a police officer and hearings should be finished by late March.
